How to draft an APA-style reference from source details

A citation tool formats the information you provide; it does not verify a publication. Follow this example and a review checklist before submitting references.

Collect source details before formatting

Open the real publication and record its authors, year, title, publisher or journal information and any DOI or stable URL. For books, use the edition you consulted. For online articles, distinguish the work title from the site or journal title. If a source has no date, check the required style rules instead of inventing a year.

Use the quick form or enter JSON

For everyday use, the APA Citation Generator offers a simple form: enter author, publication year, title, publisher or source, and an optional HTTPS link. It passes the details into the existing local generator. Advanced users can still enter a JSON object with keys such as author, year, title, source and url. In JSON mode, keep double quotation marks around keys and strings.

Illustrative fictional example

Paste the following text into the generator's input box:

{"author":"Smith, J.","year":"2024","title":"Research methods","source":"Academic Press","url":"https://example.com/research"}

The tool's example reference draft is: Smith, J. (2024). Research methods. Academic Press. https://example.com/research.

This source is fictional. Do not submit it as an actual research reference.

Generate and review the reference

  1. Paste your own verified JSON details into the generator.
  2. Use the generator and copy the reference draft.
  3. Compare the draft with the source itself: spelling, publication year, title, URL and authors.
  4. Check italics, sentence case, author ordering, DOI formatting and punctuation against the APA edition your institution requires.
  5. Check that the reference belongs in the correct category: book, chapter, journal article, webpage or another work type.

Four common mistakes to avoid

Fabricated details: A polished citation is not proof that the article exists. Access date used as publication year: The date you visited a webpage normally is not its publication year. Missing source type: A book and a journal article do not share identical reference patterns. Assuming every field is mandatory: Optional fields depend on the source type and the rules you are following.

How accurate is this tool for APA 7?

It creates an APA-style draft using the information you supply. It does not look up bibliographic databases or independently validate current APA 7 rules for every publication type. Verify the result against your institution's current referencing instructions or the official APA guidance before submitting academic work.

Prepare input before citing

If your input fails to parse, use the JSON Formatter to identify syntax problems. Then return to the APA Citation Generator. You can also extract URLs from your own notes, but an extracted URL does not validate the associated source.
