Convert CSV with quoted commas, double quotes and Markdown pipes

CSV is more than text separated by commas. A proper conversion must understand quotation marks before turning data into a TSV file, a Markdown table or an Excel workbook.

Why a simple find-and-replace breaks CSV

A comma normally separates fields. But commas between double quotation marks belong to one field. For example, "Ada, Lovelace" is one name, not two separate cells. Replacing every comma with a tab would split the name and shift the data into the wrong columns.

CSV also doubles a quote inside a quoted field. The CSV text "Says ""hello""" represents the value Says "hello". A converter must interpret both the outside quotes and the doubled inner quotation marks.

Example CSV — copy these three lines
Name,Notes,Amount
"Ada, Lovelace","Uses x|y notation",15.50
"Grace Hopper","Says ""hello""",20.00

The first line has three headings. Both data rows also contain exactly three values even though some cells contain punctuation.

Method 1: convert to TSV

  1. Open Convert CSV to TSV.
  2. Paste the example above, keeping the double quotation marks exactly as written.
  3. Click the processing button and inspect the result before downloading or copying.
  4. Paste the output into a tab-aware editor or spreadsheet and check that every row has three cells.

In the tested output, Ada, Lovelace stayed inside one cell even though it contains a comma. TSV uses the tab character to separate columns. The converter kept a properly escaped, quoted representation for the value containing inner double quotation marks; that is different from saying the quotation marks became extra columns.

Round-trip test: We converted this example from CSV to TSV and then back with TSV to CSV. The CSV text did not come back byte-for-byte identical: unnecessary outside quotes were omitted from some cells. The cell values and three-column structure were preserved in the test. Do not depend on exact whitespace or quote placement when comparing exported files.

Method 2: convert CSV to a Markdown table

Markdown tables use the pipe character (|) to separate columns. That creates another trap: the note Uses x|y notation contains a pipe that is data, not a column divider.

Open CSV to Markdown table and paste the same CSV. The tested result escaped the pipe inside that cell:

Relevant portion of the generated table
| Name | Notes | Amount |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Ada, Lovelace | Uses x\|y notation | 15.50 |
| Grace Hopper | Says "hello" | 20.00 |

That backslash before the pipe helps Markdown renderers recognize it as text rather than as a fourth column. The exact display depends on the Markdown parser you use, so preview the final table in your editor or publishing system.

Method 3: create an actual Excel file

If your audience needs a spreadsheet rather than text, use CSV to XLSX. We separately tested this converter with sample tabular data and confirmed that it produced an actual XLSX-format download, not merely a CSV renamed with an Excel extension.

CSV does not store workbook formulas, formatting, merged cells, chart objects or multiple sheet tabs. Those cannot be recovered simply by converting the file to XLSX. Spreadsheet software may also automatically interpret long identifiers, leading zeroes and dates. Inspect those values before editing and sharing.

What to check before using converted data

  1. Column count: Check that every record still has the expected number of fields.
  2. Quoted fields: Test values containing commas, quotation marks, line breaks and tabs.
  3. Character encoding: Keep a copy of the UTF-8 source when working with accented characters or multiple languages.
  4. Downstream parsing: Check the result in the specific spreadsheet, CMS or Markdown renderer that will use it.
  5. Sensitive data: Do not publish a sample containing customer details, private invoices or credentials. Substitute fictional values for troubleshooting.

Questions people commonly ask

Should I replace commas with tabs manually?

Only for extremely simple data when you know the input has no quoted commas, embedded quotes or special cases. A parser is safer for real CSV exports.

Is CSV-to-TSV reversible?

Often yes at the data-value level, but exact file bytes or quoting conventions can change. Our example round trip preserved the data and column structure while changing some unnecessary outside quotes.

Will CSV-to-Markdown work with multi-line cells?

Some converters normalize embedded line breaks so a row can remain on one Markdown line. Do not assume the original line-break formatting will be preserved; inspect the output.

Can I use these tools for confidential spreadsheets?

CraftAI's converters process inputs in the browser, but always follow your organization's data-handling rules. Avoid posting private sample data in public bug reports. If conversion fails, report the tool name, file format and error text via Contact.
