How to merge PDF files in the right order
Combine PDF documents, check their page sequence and avoid common merging mistakes.
When does combining PDFs help?
Suppose an application requires your cover letter, résumé and supporting certificates as a single upload. You can combine those three documents instead of asking the recipient to open three separate files. A merger preserves page content but does not review it for accuracy, readability or relevance.
Step-by-step process
- Open Merge PDFs and choose the documents you want in the final file.
- Arrange or select them in the sequence you need. Order is important: a cover sheet normally comes before the supporting documents.
- Run the merge operation and download the new PDF after processing finishes.
- Open the downloaded result and scan the first, middle and last page. Confirm nothing is missing or unexpectedly rotated.
Start with 01-cover.pdf (1 page), 02-profile.pdf (2 pages) and 03-certificates.pdf (4 pages). If each input is valid and all pages are accepted, the merged output should contain 7 pages in that order. Count the pages after downloading; never assume a successful download means the contents are correct.
What merging does not do
Merging is not optical character recognition, text editing or compression. If an original PDF contains a blurry scan, the merged document normally retains that blur. If you need a smaller output, try the separate Compress PDF utility and compare results; a size reduction is not guaranteed.
Common questions
Will the output preserve the source sequence?
The tool is designed to add documents in the selected file order. Verify the displayed sequence and finished file, particularly if you selected several files at once on a mobile device.
What if one document is protected or damaged?
A password-protected or malformed input may fail to open. Use a valid document you are authorised to access; do not rely on merging as a way to remove protection. Try each PDF separately to identify the problematic file.
For formal submissions, check the receiving organisation's page size, file-size and naming requirements before uploading.
Put the steps into practice
The linked utility opens in your browser. Review its current on-page limits and inspect the output before sharing it.
